This legal working paper discusses the creation of a new international crime: crimes against future generations. The initiative of creating crimes against future generations grew from discussions held by the Commission on Future Justice set up by the World Future Council (WFC) to develop new laws and policies in order to guarantee human security, ecological integrity and social equity in the interest of future generations and was led by Hon. Christopher J. Weeramantry, Bianca Jagger, and Prof. Marie-Claire Cordonier Segger.

Policies to Change the World, Energy Sufficiency – Eight Policies towards the Sustainable Use of Energy, from the World Future Council, introduces the principle of energy sufficiency and explains why only efficiency and conservation can achieve the more ambitious energy reduction scenarios. It presents eight proven and effective policies to help reduce worldwide energy consumption: Energy audits for existing buildings, phasing out of incandescent light bulbs, energy performance contracting, incentivising combined heat/cooling energy and power, the ‘Top Runner’ programme, carbon-negative cooking, smart metering and area road pricing.
Willingness to change is now widespread throughout the world. Often, all that decision-makers require is the right advice and sometimes a little nudge to remind them of the urgent need for action! This is what we do. In our Annual Report we collected various reports of our work.during 2008.
One year ago, in May 2007, the World Future Council was established. So far, our aim of speaking and acting for the
rights of future generations has touched many people all over the world. By participating in various projects, we have seen that important steps are already being taken in many countries to protect our future.
