Dear Friends & Supporters,

Welcome to the April edition of the WFC newsletter! As someone who has spent many years helping young people to become self-reliant, skilled and sustainable members of their communities and societies, I am very happy that the WFC has just launched a major new initiative on youth empowerment.
As always the WFC is looking for innovative policies that are both timely and have been shown to work. The ongoing global youth climate strikes prove beyond doubt that there is a huge need and desire for positive, sustainable solutions that support youth leadership, engagement and entrepreneurship.

To kick off this search we’ve partnered with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), with the support of the Office of the UN Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth, the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and Youth Policy Labs to find and highlight policies that empower young people through decent and sustainable jobs as well as civic and political participation.

If you know of any examples that everyone should know about, please nominate them! At a time when the world’s youth population is bigger than ever before, young people are facing unemployment rates triple that of adults. It is essential for all of our futures that this huge potential is not wasted. Youth can be powerful agents of change, driving important conversations and actions today on critical issues like climate change, peacebuilding, and innovation.

We hope you can join us in the coming months as we find and celebrate the most impactful and inspiring ways that young women and men are having their skills developed, being meaningfully represented in parliaments and decision-making bodies and being agents of change in the greener, fairer societies and economies of the future.
Thank you for your attention, and best wishes
Dr Auma Obama

The Move the Nuclear Weapons Money conference held in Basel from April 12-13 was a great success, in particular in building connection and cooperation between climate change and disarmament action networks. The conference focused in particular on Building a peace economy through divestment from fossil fuel & nuclear weapons industries and socially responsible (impact) investment. We had a range of excellent presentations from legislators (parliamentarians and city councilors), financial advisers, pension fund managers, climate change and disarmament experts and representatives of NGO.
