Im Jahr 2007 war er Mitbegr\u00fcnder des World Future Council und bis 2012 dessen Programmdirektor. Er hat als Berater f\u00fcr UN-Habitat und UNEP gearbeitet. Er hat Nachhaltigkeitsstrategien f\u00fcr Gro\u00dfst\u00e4dte wie London, Wien und Bristol entwickelt. Von 2010 bis 2013 war er leitender Berater der saudischen Nachhaltigkeitsinitiative mit Sitz in Riyadh. Im Jahr 2003 war er der erste \u201eThinker in Residence\u201c in Adelaide und entwickelte Strategien f\u00fcr nachhaltige Entwicklung in S\u00fcdaustralien, die vollst\u00e4ndig umgesetzt wurden.<\/p>\n<p>Auf dem Erdgipfel von Rio 1992 wurde er mit dem \u201eGlobal 500 Award for Outstanding Environmental Achievements\u201c der UN ausgezeichnet. Er ist Gastprofessor an der University of the West of England. Von 1996 bis 2008 war er Vorsitzender der Schumacher Society, UK, und Gr\u00fcndungsherausgeber der Schumacher Briefings. Er ist Ehrenmitglied des Royal Institute of British Architects, Schirmherr der Soil Association, UK, Treuh\u00e4nder von Resurgence\/ Ecologist und von Artists Project Earth.<\/p>\n<p>Herbert ist Autor und Mitautor von 13 Sachb\u00fcchern, darunter: BLUEPRINT FOR A GREEN PLANET, 1986 (Dorling Kindersley); EARTHRISE \u2013 How we can heal our injured planet, 1992 (Paladin); THE GAIA ATLAS OF CITIES, 1992 und 1996 (Gaia Books); CITIES, PEOPLE, PLANET \u2013 Urban Development and Climate Change, 2004 und 2008 (Wiley); SHAPING OUR FUTURE \u2013 Creating the World Future Council, 2005 (Green Books); SURVIVING THE CENTURY \u2013 Facing Climate Change and other Global Challenges, 2008 (Earthscan); A RENEWABLE WORLD \u2013 Energy, Ecology, Equality, 2009 (Green Books): CREATING REGENERATIVE CITIES, 2015 (Routledge). Die meisten seiner B\u00fccher sind auch in fremdsprachigen Ausgaben erschienen. Er hat auch verschiedene Berichte und Kapitel f\u00fcr andere B\u00fccher geschrieben.<\/p>\n<p>Von 1985 bis 2000 arbeitete Herbert auch als Forscher, Berater, Produzent und Regisseur zahlreicher Fernsehdokumentationen f\u00fcr gro\u00dfe Rundfunksender, darunter die siebenst\u00fcndige Fernsehserie FAR FROM PARADISE (1986) und drei im Amazonasgebiet gedrehte Filme: JUNGLE PHARMACY (1987), THE ALTAMIRA GATHERING (1989) und HALTING THE FIRES (1990).
