He realised how easily war could have broken out in Europe in the 1980s through a misunderstanding while the Soviet Union was already dis-integrating.

The role of exemplary laws and policies in upholding children’s rights and promoting a healthy environment

What relationship exists between children’s rights and the environment? The World Future Council has submitted a written contribution to the Convention on the Rights of the Child’s Day of General Discussion: “Children’s Rights and the Environment”, highlighting visionary policies that recognise the strong relationship between children’s rights and the environment.

Recognising nature as a legal person: the Whanganui River in New Zealand

The relationship between indigenous peoples and nation states is historically marked by conflict and oppression, and the exploitation of natural resources, usually ignoring indigenous knowledge, feed into these conflicts. The 2014 Whanganui River Deed of Settlement is an exemplary attempt to protect the River’s natural resources while respecting the long ignored voices of the local Whanganui tribes.

Seizing the Solar Energy Revolution in Tanzania

When Ajuna Kagaruki and her husband built their new house in Mabwepande, a suburb of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, it was not an option to wait for the government to connect the area to the national grid. Instead, they decided to take action themselves in order to have electricity for their life with the three children. Today, a 120 kwh Solar Home System (SHS) lights the house, powers a TV and an iron and charges their mobile phones.

Renewable Energy and Sustainable Development

Societies around the world are on the verge of a profound and urgently necessary transformation in the way they produce and use energy. This shift is moving the world away from the consumption of fossil fuels toward cleaner, renewable forms of energy. Pauline is a Maori elder, advocate for the environment and indigenous issues. 100% renewable energy and poverty reduction in Tanzania

CAN-Tanzania, the World Future Council and Bread for the World have embarked on a 18-month project in Tanzania to develop a coherent strategy on how to implement 100% Renewable Energy (RE) as part of the country’s Sustainable Low Carbon Development (LCD) and Poverty Reduction Goals.

Global Policy Action Plan (GPACT)

The Global Policy Action Plan provides a best policy guide for policymakers worldwide. Twenty-three interlinked policy reforms will enable us to progressively build a shared sustainable human future. They provide the foundations for legitimate hope that we can still secure a living planet with a multitude of futures.
