Global UN-STAND-UP Event features WFC Councillors’ video appeals

UN and WFC cooperate for Millennium Development Goals

The UN has approached the WFC with a request to help promote the Millennium Development Goals. In order to increase public pressure on the international community and to address the 189 governments that signed the Millennium Declaration in 2000, the UN media partner Deutsche Welle has filmed impressive video appeals with seven councillors who are all recipients of the Right Livelihood Award. Click on their names to watch the videos by Prof. Hans-Peter Dürr (Germany), Hermann Scheer (Germany), Frances Moore-Lappé (USA), Dr. Vandana Shiva (India), Francisco Whitaker (Brazil) and Sulak Sivaraksa (Thailand). About five other WFC councillors - Maude Barlow, Judge C.G. Weeramantry, Prof. Manfred Max-Neef, Dr. Tewolde Berhan Egziabher and Wes Jackson - Deutsche Welle will produce special reports.

On October 17th, the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, the WFC appeals are shown on large public screens, such as at Berlin’s Potsdamer Platz. The videos will motivate people worldwide to participate in the global UN Stand Up Event on this special day. Last year 43.7 million people in more than 100 countries stood up against poverty and for the Millennium Development Goals. This year the United Nations want to break this record to raise even higher awareness for this crucial issue. The WFC is proud to be part of this great endeavour.
