Speaking about the establishment of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) WFC Chair Bianca Jagger said on June 26th that this new organisation has the potential to ignite a global renewable energy revolution. In her statement Jagger also pointed to the growing concerns of many international nongovernmental organisations about the nuclear energy lobby’s efforts to label nuclear energy as a low carbon or even clean energy source. 23rd – 26th June, 2009: WFC at European Green Week
The Green Week in Brussels is Europe's biggest conference and exhibition on environmental policy. The World Future Council takes part with an info booth at the exhibition and several speakers in the conference programme: WFC Councillor Ashok Khosla addressed the question of how industrialisation and higher living standards in emerging economies can be reconciled with achieving climate stability. Both Ashok Khosla and WFC Founder Jakob von Uexkull participated in a session that outlined the consequences of a “greened” economy for our industries, our lifestyles and society as a whole. WFC Director of Programmes Herbert Girardet spoke about what decarbonisation could mean for transport and spatial planning.

Jakob von Uexkull received the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany on 4th June.
