The World Future Council Here at the World Future Council we endeavor to bring the interests of future generations to the centre of policy making. We inform policy makers about future just policies and advise them on how to implement these. Political solutions for the challenges of our time exist.
Future Policy Award 2012 Oceans and Coasts Over 70 per cent of the earth is covered in oceans and major seas. Their health is a prerequisite for the survival of humanity. Therefore the WFC will present its Future Policy Award 2012 to the world’s best policies on the protection of oceans and coasts. For this year’s award the WFC has won high-profile partners: the UN Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Okeanos Foundation. The winning policies will be announced at the United Nations Headquarters in September 2012. The award ceremony on October 16 will be part of the 11th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP-11). >>
The Next Five Years Strategy Meeting in SEKEM Fine-tuning the WFC strategy for the next five year is the aim of a four-day internal meeting in Egypt in mid-March. Councillor Dr. Ibrahim Abouleish has invited members of the Council, the Supervisory Board and the Board of Advisors as well as senior staff members to meet on his biodynamic farm SEKEM. The result of the discussions will be submitted to the Council at the Annual General Meeting in November. The strategy meeting will be based on a paper by WFC Founder Jakob von Uexkull. >>
New Councillors Seven new Councillors were elected at our last Annual General Meeting: American actress and environmental activist Daryl Hannah; Minister of Natural and Cultural Heritage from the Republic of Ecuador, María Fernanda Espinosa; Rt. Hon John Gummer, Lord Deben, President of GLOBE International; Julia Marton-Lefèvre, Director General of International Union for Conservation of Nature; Thais Corral, co- founder of the Women, Environment and Development Organization; Ana María Cetto, co-founder of Third World Organization for Women in Science; and Anuradha Mittal, founder of progressive policy think tank Oakland Institute. >>
We Demand the Global Nuclear Phase Out In a joint statement 50 laureates of the Right Livelihood Award and members of the World Future Council demand a global nuclear phase out. “Nuclear power is neither the answer to modern energy problems nor a panacea for climate change challenges.
