Helena Kennedy

Baroness Helena Kennedy, Barrister and QC; President, School of Oriental and African Studies (London University); Member of the House of Lords, UK

Baroness Helena Kennedy is a barrister and member of the House of Lords, where she participates on issues concerning human rights, civil liberties, social justice and culture. Helena studied law at the Council of Legal Education in London. Her skills as an advocate and social reformer have taken her into various fields of activity. Among others she was chair of the Charter 88 constitutional reform group, President of the National Children's Bureau, Vice-President of the Association of Women Barristers and Chair of the Howard League's Commission of Inquiry into Violence in Penal Institutions for Young People. She is now president of the School of Oriental and African Studies at London University and also currently chairs the Human Genetics Commission, which advises the UK government on ethical, social and legal issues arising from developments in genetic science.
