Hans-Peter Dürr – The story of his life and work
Eighty guests joined WFC Councillor Prof. Dr. Hans-Peter Dürr and Dr. Barbara Doll (WFC Board of Advisors) in Hamburg on November 19th for a presentation of his newest book “Warum es ums Ganze geht” (dealing with the whole picture). The publication, which is so far only available in German, is a summary of Dürr’s life, knowledge and experiences as a nuclear physicist and philosopher growing up during the war. After two hours filled with anecdotes from his fascinating life the audience had an array of questions lined up to go deeper into the subject...

Vandana Shiva – Successful book tour in Germany
Vandana Shiva, WFC Councillor and Founder of the Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology, visited Germany’s capital city on November 3rd to present her latest book “Soil not Oil”. Former German Federal Minister for Agriculture, Renate Künast, was invited as a special guest to discuss the book. As on the previous dates of her book tour, Vandana Shiva spoke in front of a fully packed venue in Berlin. The event resulted in a lively evening with interesting insights on the environment and a good introduction to the necessity of living without oil.

Saving Planet Earth in four days
Student representatives from the 16 Sri Lankan Universities attended a four-day workshop at the Weeramantry Centre for Peace Education & Research (WICPER) in Piliyandala, India, from November 19th – 22nd. The students learned about leading and supporting environmental protection initiatives and saving our planet as being essential capabilities of the world’s future leaders. In his keynote address, WFC Councillor Justice C. G. Weeramantry spoke on the concept of Earth trusteeship and the importance of peace education.

The Tar Sands Blow
WFC Councillor Maude Barlow, in her role as national Chairperson to the Council of Canadians, is supporting the demand for no new approvals of tar sand developments and expansions. There are serious social, environmental and economic consequences of tar sands development, such as water waste and contamination. Faced with a standstill in the market caused by dropping oil prices, the opportunity exists to address the market-oriented energy gold rush in tar sands and plan for more sustainable energy production and consumption. The Council of Canadians are proposing a Canadian Energy Strategy that puts the interests of people and the environment first. Watch the video The Tar Sands That Blow.
