Our current energy system uses up scarce fossil fuels a million times faster than nature produces them. Cheap fossil fuel energy is a key ingredient in modern cities and their transport systems. If the era of cheap oil and gas ends before a viable alternative energy order is in place, the widespread disruption of our societies is threatened. Few people regard nuclear energy, which leaves wastes that remain highly toxic for geological time periods, as a plausible alternative.
